Overview

The Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) was set up in January 2006 and officially launched by DPM Wong Kan Seng in London on 13 March 2006. Its role is to plan and coordinate multi-agency programmes and initiatives to engage the Overseas Singaporean community.

Mission

The Overseas Singaporean community is an integral part of Singapore society. The Government set up the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) to coordinate efforts to help connect Overseas Singaporean back to Singapore and with each other.

To actively engage Overseas Singaporeans, OSU's mission falls into three broad areas:

First and foremost, the OSU will actively provide information to Overseas Singaporeans. We aim to enable Overseas Singaporeans to get updates about developments in Singapore and facilitate their access to various services provided by the public and private sectors.

Second, we hope to create a 'home away from home". This would involve supporting initiatives to enable our Overseas Singaporean Diaspora to bond and network among themselves and also with locally-based Singaporeans. This would include events in cities with significant Overseas Singaporean communities as well as back in Singapore.

Third, the OSU works with the people, private and public sector partners to connect Overseas Singaporeans who are interested in employment opportunities to employers back in Singapore or in Singapore-based companies with overseas operations.

Programmes & Initiatives

The OSU coordinates existing programmes and introduces new initiative, where appropriate, to engage the Overseas Singaporean Diaspora.

Some of the OSU's key initiatives include:

  • Overseas Singaporean Portal, a dedicated website to serve the needs of Overseas Singaporeans - www.overseassingaporean.sg
  • The Overseas Singaporean Club (or OS Club) serves as a platform for Overseas Singaporeans to come together and bond. It provides Overseas Singaporeans with a place to call their "home away from home". OS Clubs offer a meeting and activity centre for Overseas Singaporeans, where they can enjoy privileges including discounts at the hotel's F&B establishments, room rates, venue hiring and recreational facilities.
  • Distinguished Business Leaders Series brings key business and corporate leaders to cities with significant Singaporean communities to enable Overseas Singaporeans to meet with and network with them. Through the DBL series, Overseas Singaporeans can find out more about the job and business opportunities in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Singapore Day, a signature event in a key city with a significant community of Overseas Singaporeans. It is organised in collaboration with the people, private and public sector to bring a slice of home to Overseas Singaporeans.
